Incident: ANU says ‘sophisticated operator’ stole data in new cyber breach | SMH

Up to 200,000 students and staff of the Australian National University have had personal data stolen in a “sophisticated” cyber attack that echoes a similar breach last year attributed to the Chinese government.

The university has admitted the hackers stole data stretching back 19 years that included bank details, passport information and academic records of current and former students and staff.

“Depending on the information you have provided to the university, this may include names, addresses, dates of birth, phone numbers, personal email addresses and emergency contact details, tax file numbers, payroll information, bank account details, and passport details. Student academic records were also accessed.”

In a statement, Federal Parliament’s presiding officers said authorities were yet to detect any evidence that data had been stolen in the overnight breach.

Canberra man, was an assistant director within the cyber and information security branch of the Australian Signals Directorate.

University of Canberra accidentally sends 24 staff details of every employee | The Canberra Times

The University of Canberra has accidentally sent some staff the personal details of every employee, including their birth date, classification, average hours and salary.

Vice-chancellor Deep Saini said an “administrative error” led to 24 employees receiving the email with searchable data on all their colleagues attached.

The University of Canberra did not respond to a question on whether employees’ information had made its way outside the institution.
