Incident: Cyber-security breach at Federal Parliament prompts security agency investigation | ABC News Australia

Computer passwords are reset as Australia’s security agencies investigate a cyber-security breach at Federal Parliament.

In a statement, Federal Parliament’s presiding officers said authorities were yet to detect any evidence that data had been stolen in the overnight breach.

It took one NSW Government agency 49 days to shut down a hack by fraudsters, a new report on cyber security in the public service has revealed.

The attempted financial fraud in 2017 involved a government agency and its IT systems provider, and spread to other agencies before it was reported and stopped.

The case study is part of a new report by the state’s auditor-general Margaret Crawford

Hackers Attack The NSW Government Department Of Resources And Energy | ABC News (Australia)

Australian Information Security Incident Reported: February 4 2016

The NSW Government Department of Resources and Energy has revealed that it was the target of a cyber attack in December 2015, during the time several major projects were being considered. This includes the $1.2 billion Shenhua Watermark coal mine, indirectly controlled by the Chinese government — which experts say is a possible source of the attack.

The attack was in the form of an increase in “virus/security activity attempting to impact systems at the Division of Resources and Energy (DRE) office in Maitland”, according the the department, and steps were taken to increase security after the activity was detected.
