Payment terminal supplier Smartpay has suffered a “ransomware cyber incident” that resulted in the theft of information relating to a group of customers in Australia and New Zealand.

In an announcement to the Australian Securities Exchange, the company emphasised that it doesn’t “collect or store individual cardholder information” when processing transactions, but did not stipulate what information was breached.

Smartpay said it has engaged cybersecurity specialist CyberCX, after discovering the incident and is working with the government.

A Smartpay spokesman said the firm could not comment on the ransom amount demanded or if any negotiations were taking place. The number of customers affected was still being determined.
