Incident: Victorian Government employees’ details stolen in data breach | ABC News (Australia)

Australian Information Security Incident Reported: January 01 2019

The work details of 30,000 Victorian public servants are stolen in a data breach, after part of the Victorian Government directory is downloaded by an unknown party.

The list is available to government employees and contains work emails, job titles and work phone numbers.

Employees affected by the breach were told in an email their mobile phone numbers may have also been accessed if they had been entered into the directory.

“Because of this incident you may experience increased phishing, spam and social engineering attempts via your work email address and telephone numbers,” the email notifying the employees read.

Access to tens of thousands of files published online by the Victorian Government has been removed amid controversy over the release of Victorians’ personal data included in the document dump, which reportedly includes private information about the mother of Hollywood brothers Chris and Liam Hemsworth.

The woman’s medical history, home address, bank balances, details of her share portfolio and superannuation account and her daughter’s name and date of birth were included in 80,000 pages of documents that were tabled in Parliament and posted online this week.

Australian govt sites hijacked by crypto coin miner | iTnews

The Queensland government’s main site for its legislation has been hijacked, as have websites belonging to the likes of Queensland Urban Utilities, the Victorian parliament, and South Australia’s City of Unley.

More than 4000 Australian and global government websites have been hijacked to run the Coinhive crypto currency mining software after a popular accessibility tool was compromised by attackers.
