The NSW Department of Communities and Justice (DCJ) has confirmed a significant cyber breach involving its Online Registry website. Approximately 9,000 sensitive court documents, including apprehended violence orders and affidavits, were accessed without authorization. The breach has raised concerns about the safety and privacy of individuals involved in legal proceedings.

A 38-year-old man will appear in court today to face charges in connection with a data breach of “sensitive” NSW court filings a month ago.

Details: The breach was discovered on Tuesday, prompting an investigation by NSW Police under Strike Force Pardey. The DCJ is collaborating with Cyber Security NSW and law enforcement to contain the breach and assess its impact. Legal experts have expressed alarm over the potential risks to domestic violence victims whose private information may have been compromised.

Response: NSW Attorney-General Michael Daley assured the public that the government is taking the incident seriously. Efforts are underway to identify affected users and provide updates as more information becomes available. Victims are encouraged to report concerns through the federal government’s ReportCyber website.

Implications: The breach highlights vulnerabilities in digital systems managing sensitive information. Legal professionals have called for enhanced security measures to prevent future incidents and protect vulnerable individuals.
